Q: Would I be interested in illustrating a children’s book?
A: Absolutely
So began a 14 month project in which I did no fewer than 27 hand-painted illustrations, not to mention a colouring book, and seven seasonal spreads to boot.
Written by Julian Reisz, it tells of a young squirrel whose tail is yanked off as she falls from a great oak tree. Her father steals out at night to gather some wool and knits her the most gorgeous tail in her favourite colours.
Cast in the form of an allegory for DDH* (from Julian’s daughter suffered as a baby, it was a delight to illustrate.
